Statistics show, household spending & sentiment have weakened because unemployment has ticked up to about 4.4%, much higher than last year. According to the Conference Board readings, Consumer confidence fell sharply, and retail spending has slowed which indicates a red flag for future growth because consumption drives two-thirds of GDP.
My first day in office, I will work to restore affordability, protect working families, and strengthen long-term economic growth. I will help pass a bill to make sure the vulnerable will continue to be protected. My goal is to make sure unemployment insurance, SNAP, and housing assistance are more responsive during local shocks (easier access, quicker payouts). This prevents serious, lasting damage to household finances and demand.
I will commit to passing targeted relief for lower-income households and help restore stable appropriations to prevent future shutdown disruptions to data and markets. I personally believe this can only be done if we launch a bipartisan package that focuses on affordability in lowering grocery pricing, housing, childcare workforce training, and a more competitive enforcement to reduce costs and raise supply in the next 2-5 years.
